iPad Apps/Games : Today Only: Download Compression For Free

Little White Bear Studios‘ match-three game, Compression, is available for free today as part of FreeAppADay.com’s promotion.

Compression employs the usual match-three mechanic by requiring you to spin, slide, and drop colored blocks via touch controls in order to match three or more like-colored blocks in a vertical or horizontal row.  When accomplished, those pieces will be removed from the game board.  The goal of the game is to remove all hollow blocks from the game board before you run out of space, and that’s where the twist comes in.

Compression’s game board is, well, constantly compressing.  Every third piece dropped will move a wall inward.  You are able to identify which wall will be moving via three white dots.  When the dots are gone, the wall moves.  This little twist also requires you to plan ahead since pieces will be pushed together, possibly helping or hindering you in your quest.

The game features unlimited levels thanks to randomly generated game boards, unique techno-ish music, and OpenFeint integration.

Compression is normally available for $.99, but today only (1/30/10) it is available for free.

Apple Takes On Amazon With iBooks, iPad’s New eBook App

When rumors of an Apple tablet started to hit the web, the first thing that came to most people’s minds was that it would be a Kindle killer.  Well, it’s certainly too early to assume that, being that the device won’t be shipping for another two months, but it will at least be able to compete with the Kindle thanks to a new native eBook app called iBooks.

iBooks looks strikingly similar to the well-known iPhone eBook app Classics.  It gives you access to tons of different books ranging from classics to bestseller from some of the biggest publishers, such as Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, and Hachette. iBooks uses the standard ePub format, so hopefully it will be cross-platform with other online stores.

When you purchase a book, it will be placed and displayed on your personal bookshelf.  To read a book, simply tap it and it will open up.  You are then able to tap to change pages or swipe, and you can choose different fonts and text sizes to suit your needs.

New books are said to cost $14.99, but hopefully they will drop in price as the competition begins to heat up.

iPad Apps/Games : iPhone OS 3.2 Hides Its Game: Contains Video Calling, Downloading, SMS & Handwriting Functions

The iPad hasn’t hit the market yet that hackers all around the world are trying to unveil its secrets.

It’s actually quite exciting because these efforts are really paying off. Apple engineers have left in iPhone OS 3.2, the iPad’s operating system, a huge amount of clues that point to features Steve forgot to tell us about.

There is, for example, a whole lot of functions prepared to support video conferencing. There is also a file downloading function that works a little bit like your picture gallery. It lets you download files from your browser and save them in a file library which you can later access from your apps.

Here are some of the hidden features:

  • a spell checker with multiple dictionaries
  • rich text support for apps
  • Location aware ads in maps
  • File upload in Safari
  • SMS support
  • A prototype “Handwriting keyboard”

Well, of course this doesn’t actually mean they’ll ever activate them, but they are sure thinking about it.

Apple’s Tablet To Hit Both AT&T & Verizon

We’re hearing some more today about the Tablet’s connectivity. According to FoxNews’ Clayton Morris, and he is pretty affirmative about this, it will be actually featuring 3G on both AT&T & Verizon :

Apple is in talks with both AT&T and Verizon to support the tablet, according to sources within the companies: One version of the device will run on CDMA networks such as Verizon’s, and one will operate on GSM networks like that owned by AT&T.

[...] One thing’s for certain: I can’t wait for next Wednesday, to see both Verizon and AT&T executives in the same room at the Apple event. With any luck, Apple will pass out flak jackets at the door.

Apple partnering with multiple carriers in the same country is really no novelty and with the network becoming a touchy issue lately, his might even make a significant difference :

The Next iPhone 4G Spotted Online In San Francisco

Posted by Alexander Vaughn on: November 28th, 2009, 6.28 pm

The developer of iBart (a transit application for San Francisco) had apparently a very nice surprise today. While consulting his Pinchmedia report he discovered that his app has been installed and used on an device that identifies itself as “iPhone 3.1″ :

PinchMedia who provides the analytics for the application breaks down customer usage including what specific devices are being used. This list of devices is reported to developers using internal device identification numbers assigned by Apple. In this case, “iPhone3,1″ was first spotted in Pandav’s usage logs in November.

The latest iPhone, the 3GS identifies itself as “iPhone 2.1″ so apparently the new iPhone model would be undergoing real life tests in the San Francisco area.

All of this is not really surprising actually, the 3GS model was also first spotted online around november 2008 and we already saw references to the new model in Apple’s iPhone firmware.

I’m personally hoping that it will feature a shaver and the latest ARM dual-core processors… you?

[Update] One of our commenters (Who would apparently be Saurik, Cydia’s creator) is pointing out an interesting fact : It is actually possible to “fake” your device identifier by jailbreaking your iPhone and changing the system files.

Also, don’t get excited about the picture, it’s a fake of course.

Would this just be a hoax?
